Stitch Work for Fine Art

IMG_0886I wanted to see what i could do with free hand stitch. I used Letraset pro markers to do the shading for a drawing i did on some calico. this starting point moved me to wanting to do building blocks from stitch.

The starting point didn’t really have a direction originally but i thought i would carry on with what i was doing with the stitch work.

IMGP0603i thought having splay with the blocks and the same war of doing the images on the calico would maybe spark some inspiration.

the first one i did was a wire structure for the inside to hold it in the right shape. i then just stitched the colosseum on to the calico then made a cube without the bottom being stitched together i then hand stitched the bottom so that it would sit and stand correctly.

IMGP0604The second one i did was just of the markers because the sewing machine was being used at the time. this cube was made by making a cardboard cube in the inside then sewn together the same way as the first with it just fitting around the outside and hand stitching the bottom.

IMGP0605the final one i wanted to do square by square being stitched together separately this one had card sewn in between layers of calico .

After changing the out set of my fine art piece to be about the water levels rising. this piece then became irrelevant to my work i want to do now.

Ron Arad

ron_arad

Ron Arad best known for his sheet metal furniture and his book worm book shelf.

A lot of Ron’s work is very clean cut and shaped because of his large use of sheet metal.

tom_bloc_02

A lot of his designs look very sharp and some how comfy even though they are very industrial and straight lined.

Ron also does work in plastics too because of the expense is a lot smaller then usingmetal.

One of his best known plastic pieces is the bookworm bookshelf. The book shelf can be re-moulded to fit the space that is available.

I think his designs are really interesting to look at and very unique. I like the way he uses sheet metal which is then moulded to the finish he wants them, for some reason in my head I see the way he makes it in my own head as almost a conveyer belt with a big press at the end all all these moulded chairs being pressed out one after the other when actually a lot of his furniture is bespoke.

Jonathan Ive designs for apple

ive_hero20110204Jonathan Ive is a designer working for Apple.

A lot of people look at some of Apple products along side of Braun products because of the similarity. The similarity of the products in close but they are both “good” designs in the way of Dieter rams 10 principles and his own view. Dieter Rams said himself that more often then not, companies that do designs are better at designing and he thinks that Apple are one of the best companies for designing. There are a lot of similarities between the two, and a lot of people think its ripping off Braun’s designs but actually its an amazing thing to see how they have analysed what they need and then looked towards

BraunVsApple460another designer for how they should or could design it. looking at the iPod yes you see the similarity between the two like the circular position buttons very similar to Braun’s pocket radio but thats the things with design. small things can be tweaked and it sometimes works in a better way for the customer.

Jonathan Ive is largely inspired by dieter rams and follows what he says about minimalistic and economical.

In this video Dieter talks about design and his ten principles but also Jonathan Ive talks about design and the way apple make the products. He says about how when they make a mac screen the part that is punched out the middle they then use to make a key board or two. So the scrap that sometime would of been thrown away by another company, Apple use it to create a separate part to the mac.

I find it really interesting thinking about the designs to things I use daily. just thinking about my mac being designed following Dieter rams 10 principles of design makes it feel weird to know its inspired buy a designer I’ve looked at a lot in the past to help me out with my design, but its also nice to know that its a minimal waste product so all the waste from the screen could be my keyboard and someone else’s keyboard in a different part of the world. Just an interesting thought.

Dieter Rams

Dieter Rams is a German designer who worked for Braun. Braun is a german brand for electrical appliances.

In the late 70s Dieter Rams became conceded by the state of the design world, he said its “an impenetrable confusion of forms, colours and noises.” he soon created the Ten commandments of design. This gives a way to measure a good design.

Later in Dieter Rams career he made a speech and he highlighted on our shortage of natural resources. and he believe that a good design could only come from a understanding of people, he also asked everyone and anyone to take responsibility for the state of the world around them.

“I imagine our current situation will cause future generations to shudder at the thoughtlessness in the way in which we today fill our homes, our cities and our landscape with a chaos of assorted junk.”

I enjoy looking at Dieter’s work because of the way his designs go and how minimal the designs are but actually the design isn’t hiding anything or just creating more things to understand, like some things have more bottoms and things then they really need but Dieter Rams created a new way of design going towards the minimal side of things getting what it actually needs and makes it look good and refined to the smallest detail.

This image is of a element of the side of a building i liked it because of the windows and the arches over each bit. I thought it would be interesting to draw as a element of maybe my stitch work. Although i don’t know about the detail in stitch i think it will be extremely hard to get the detail in to stitch unless it was quite big piece of material. But I think it would look good but I’m not sure about how hard it might be to even try get that detail into the image even if i used the paint and ink in the background to show the detail i think it might get lost with all the stitching on the image.

This picture is a nice one of a stain glass window no detail on the windows but on the out side of the windows the curves and the supporting part to the windows i thought this was an interesting images and i think it would end up looking interesting in stitch with some inks and paint on the material to define elements of the windows i might go back and find the original image so i could add more detail to the actual windows and maybe a little colour.

I really like this picture because of how light the beams are compared to the windows. This was a picture i found in the library about Venice gothic architecture but this picture is one of my favourites that I drew and i think this would be a very successful element to go towards my project if it was stitched because of how the lines could work together with all the stitch.

This is a element do the top of a building thought it was an interesting element. I believe that this is just for decoration on the building. Other then this element it was a plain building so thought focusing on this part was nice but i think that it would of looked nice if i had drawn the whole building but the decorative element i think will look nice sewn for my textiles element of my project.
